Digital event on inclusive leadership

25th March 2025

Inclusive Leadership: Unlocking global talent - 25th March 2025

This engaging digital event brought together expert speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka to explore how businesses can advance Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

During the event, they teased out what is working and identified the barriers to faster progress, to help teams get ahead of any pushback from colleagues and customers to embed genuine inclusion across their organisations.

Key themes:

Navigating resistance: Identifying common challenges to EDI, such as resistance to change, resource limitations or blurred understanding of where responsibility sits.

Advocacy and communication: Helping everyone understand the true business benefits of EDI, and the importance of accountable, visible leadership in shaping culture.

Strategic partnerships: Sharing the responsibility for embedding EDI at the heart of organisations, to strengthen impact.

Building on the themes from CMI’s 2024 'Walking the Walk? Managers, Inclusivity and Organisational Success' report, our speakers explored how these insights are unfolding in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants gained practical strategies to address resistance, deepen understanding, and accelerate the adoption of inclusive practices. This session was designed to equip attendees with actionable steps to advance Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in their teams and workplaces.

CMI Malaysia attend BMCC diversity event

February 2025

In February, CMI Malaysia Regional Board Member Dr. Christina SS Ooi FCMI attended a complimentary event at the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC).

Dr. Christina says:

"Ahead of the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 (IWD) which will be celebrated next week on 8 March, British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) celebrated women in STEM at 𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗥: 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘴, this evening 27 February 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 🇲🇾

I had the immense privilege of representing Chartered Management Institute (𝗖𝗠𝗜) as a Board Member of CMI Malaysia at the event. Some 80+ attendees from UK university alumni network, young professionals and middle management individuals of BMCC member companies joined the session.

The highlight of the evening saw three professional women who came on a panel to share powerful and inspiring stories of their STEM journeys.

🌹 Natasha Zulkifli, Director, YTL Construction / Founder Director, Women In Rail Malaysia.

🌹 Prof. Dr. Yin Ling Woo (MB BCh BAO, FRCOG, MA, PhD), Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist, University Malaya Medical Centre.

🌹 Lee Ching Koh, Chief Executive Officer, CALMS Technologies Sdn Bhd.

And eloquently moderated by:

🌻 Prof. Dr. Mushtak Al-Atabi, Chief Executive Officer & Provost, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

We heard:

🔆 How one’s upbringing plays an important factor in shaping our outlook of life.
🔆 The need to rise to the occasion and to navigate through with self-confidence.
🔆 Always be faithful to the simple things in life because opportunities come in small doses.
🔆 Can’t dispense with hard work although it’s inevitably boring to handle. So face it with positivity.
🔆 If you have the drive, you can innovate.
🔆 Don’t be afraid to fail or falter before success comes.
🔆 Always lend a hand and be supportive of our colleagues, teams and people around us. Show empathy.
🔆 Believe in yourself. Don’t self-doubt or self-talk negatively.
🔆 Create opportunities and be resourceful.
🔆 Look for enablers and gather a good support system.
🔆 Don’t ignore the need for self-care and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
🔆 And more…

We learnt so much in just one evening.

Let’s continue to be bold and intentional. Pick up the courage to be resilient, and to champion diversity.

Happy International Women’s Day🌹"

Chartered Manager of the Week

February 2025

🌟 Meet our Chartered Manager of the Week: Dr. Guna Seelan Rethinam CMgr FCMI 🌟

Guna is always looking to learn. “I’ve always wanted to explore and gain experience in different industries so that my work keeps challenging and stretching me,” he says.

He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Management at Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur, a higher education partner of CMI Malaysia.

He realised that, despite his PhD in human resources development and years of experience across various levels of leadership, there was still a lot more he could learn about management. Guna became a CMI member three years ago and achieved Chartered Manager status in December 2023. He now sits on the Regional Board of CMI Malaysia.

One of the biggest lessons he has learned over his career is that your approach to management should never be set in stone. “There’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all,” he says. “You need to use different strategies with different people or teams, and it can be a case of trial and error, of course with calculated risk.”

February 2025

🌟 Exciting Highlights from the Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia Post Graduate Education Fair 🌟

In February CMI attended the opening the UPTM-CMI booth at the UPTM Post Graduate Education Fair at Medan MARA KL. It was an engaging and inspiring event, filled with dynamic conversations, insightful discussions, and the opportunity to connect with future leaders!

A special moment came during the walkabout session when YBhg. Dato' Sri Azhar Bin Abdul Manaf, Ketua Pengarah MARA, visited our booth. He graciously presented the CMI Level 7 - Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice to two outstanding graduates.

A huge congratulations to the graduates for their well-deserved achievement! 🎉 Your hard work and dedication are truly inspiring.

We’re thrilled to have been part of this vibrant fair and look forward to future collaborations and opportunities for growth. 🚀
